The Beginning
|
|
From being into music from as far back as he remembers, mostly
of an upbeat or emotional nature, Sonarm has enjoyed and been inspired by many
of today's artists and those from the past. Michael Jackson, Faithless, Robert
Miles, Todd Terry, Armand Van Helden, DJ Quicksilver, Spacedust, Snap... the
list goes on.
It wasn't until 1998 when he came across a particular corner
in the music scene that he really loved. It was as if his whole attitude
towards music had matured overnight.
He stood in the centre of a shop with a CD in his hand
containing so many tracks he had heard on the radio throughout that summer and
loved from the start - Dance, Trance, Breaks, House. Without hesitation he
bought it and after buying several more compilation CDs of a similar nature he
finally homed in on a genre... Trance music.

A Happy Year for a New Fan
|
|
With 1999 pushing out thousands of new Trance tracks and
artists - and having bought several more compilation albums - it was a happy
year for the new fan of the electronic genre. All these great tracks being
released, most of which became huge classics and gave Trance music its name and
has inspired the sound it has developed into today.
As the years went by Sonarm took up DJing,
partially due to the performance and atmosphere he experienced as DJ Zinc played
an inspirational Drum and Bass set at Trisect, The Charlotte, Leicester. This
was Sonarm's first club experience and, oddly enough, one of the DJs and
promoters of the Trisect event later became an encouraging mentor for DJ Sonarm and
encouraged him to be more creative and diverse in the way he performed.

Embracing Change With a New Attitude
|
|
As Trance music faded into the background
and UK Garage and Hip Hop took over, Sonarm was
forced to go out and find the music he loved and wanted to play as it was no
longer brought to him in half the volume he grew accustomed to in 1999. He was
also getting involved with the music production aspect which gave him an insight
into how the music was made and helped him realise what he wanted to hear in
Trance music.
Due to the sheer professional quality of some of the tracks
released and how they stood out over some of the other tracks, Sonarm felt
compelled to adhere to this method and create tracks that had that extra edge
and the professional sound that only artists such as DJ Tiesto, Ferry Corsten
and Armin Van Buuren had at the time.

The Present
|
|
This attitude has followed Sonarm all the way to the present
day and he still aims to produce tracks of the quality he yearned for all that
time ago. "It's not just the melodies and chords you use that make a track what
it is. In electronic music I've found it has just as much to do with the sound you use and
how it is treated that alters the entire mood of the track."
- DJ Sonarm
Although his attitude towards music has matured and opened up
vastly over the past years he has not forgotten what initially drew him into
Trance music. The absolute power and emotion involved in the music, the sense of
space, the myriad of unconventional sounds as opposed to traditional acoustic
music, the combination of soft strings, tough, crisp percussion and big pads and
synths all blended to make beauty and used effectively to express emotion in a
way no other genre could.

Thanks
|
|
With the assistance and encouragement of
John Meredith, Barry Phillips, John Rushton, Andy Richardson and Neil Schulyman at
Access-to-Music, DJ Sonarm has been able to express his emotion through music
and performance in a way that wouldn't have been possible without their
encouragement, commitment and talent.
For this DJ Sonarm thanks them endlessly.
